Technology

Students use creative skills to ‘Design and Make’ exciting Technology projects of their choice.

  • Students learn about specific materials when studying “Product Design” in Wood, Metal or Plastics.
  • They learn about Electronic & Mechanical Systems in “Systems Engineering”.

Students pose and define design solutions within a variety of design briefs, which can be transferred into the workplace and broader community.

Students develop design criteria within open-ended design guidelines, which allow students to become discerning thinkers, able to address complex design and technology issues, such as trade-offs in the selection and use of materials, systems, sustainability of resources & energy.

Students learn to apply technical language to their designed projects, through discussion and justification. Students explain design features, characteristics and properties of selected materials, system components, and their performance requirements.

Individually and in teams, students investigate systematic and creative thinking approaches for generating innovative technological projects.  This includes project management, resource management and safety. They explore and assess past mistakes and look to future consequences of technology on society, culture and the environment.

Students document their design, production and evaluation activities digitally, to produce a Design Folio whilst making the associated Projects.       

Access:

Year 7 & 8.       Students rotate through a semester each of: 

  1. Product Design in Wood
  2. Food Technology
  3. Product Design in Metals & Plastics
  4. Systems Engineering.

Year 9 & 10:      Students choose Technology as an elective, which integrates Product Design & Systems Engineering.

VCE 11 & 12.   Students choose Product Design or Systems Engineering or both.

 

PRODUCT DESIGN   &   SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

Excellent for students studying:   Information Technology,   Art,   Mathematics,   Sciences – (Physics or Chemistry).

A key feature of Technology is its ability to develop ‘multi-diversity’ which encourages the broadest possible participation and brings together all secondary subjects so that people can move freely between Universities & TAFE Institutions.

Students are advised to select their Technology subjects aiming for admission to the highest level post-secondary course that matches their interest.       

Advice:   Timetabled Information Technology classes integrate specialist design and/or electronics modelling software.  Technology provides a very sound basis for Tertiary and Trade technology courses and employment.

Further Study:  Although not always a prerequisite for Tertiary entrance, (check institutions),  Systems Engineering & Product Design Technologies are very desirable for Science and Engineering University degrees as well as Diploma, Certificate level and Apprenticeship courses in TAFE & the Defence Forces.
